At London's 3D Creative Summit, Life of Pi director Ang Lee offered some surprising advice to those just starting out shooting in 3D. He said, "Don't trust anybody. Don't let anybody tell you what 3D is, including me. The stenographers on these movies should be the filmmakers. The best way to learn is to jump in, like swimming, and learn yourself." Pre-Grading Roman Coppola's 'A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III'

Filmmaker Magazine talks to VFX artist Ryan Bozajian who also took on the role of pre-grading Roman Coppola's latest film, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, using DaVinci Resolve. Explains Bozajian, "Since I had a background in color grading, I started thinking of different ways I could cut costs using my skill sets. Some of these productions have a really tight budget. They want to have a good DI but the budget is already so tight; what if I could save a chunk of money by doing what I was calling at that time a pre-grade? I just started finding different ways to do that. This was by far the most functional and smooth and painless version of this process that I think any of us have ever done."

4K Future: 'Oblivion' Captured with Sony’s F65 CineAlta Camera

Freshly minted Academy Award winner Claudio Miranda, ASC, followed up his stunning work on Ang Lee’s Life of Pi by re-teaming with director Joseph Kosinski, his collaborator on 2010’s TRON: Legacy. Their new creation is Oblivion, a sci-fi tale based on a graphic novel written by Kosinski that reportedly nods to science-fiction classics from the 1970s. The cast is led by Tom Cruise and includes Melissa Leo, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko and Zoë Bell. The plot line follows an ex-Marine who is stationed on an airborne town above the surface of Earth, which was nearly destroyed in an alien invasion some decades prior. He rescues a female stranger, and what he learns makes him question everything he knows about the society that employs him.

Rarevision's 5DtoRGB Transcodes DSLR Footage Without Color Loss

3D CineCast reviews transcoding tool 5DtoRGB, writing, "5DtoRGB is an awesome tool that extracts every last drop of video quality from cameras that record to the AVC/H.264 video format. Cameras like the Canon EOS series of HDSLRs record video in this format with subsampled color.  Because of this compression, the picture is at risk of massive quality loss during the post production pipeline. By using a very high quality conversion process, 5DtoRGB gets you as close as possible to the original data off the camera's sensor while putting the brakes on any additional quality loss."
