Super Bowl XLVIII Most-Viewed Live Stream Ever for a Single Sports Event

FOX Sports’ live stream of Super Bowl XLVIII was watched by an average audience of 528,000 viewers per minute—the most-viewed live stream ever for a single sports event in the United States. This year’s big game also broke the record for audience engagement: Users spent an average of 47.8 minutes watching the live stream. FOX Sports provided live streams of the game on the FOX Sports GO app for iPads, Android tablets and the Kindle Fire, as well as on FOXSports.com and FOXSportsGO.com (without requiring viewers to log in or authenticate their cable TV service).

People Cost the Most

The 2103-14 Big Broadcast Survey conducted by Devoncroft Partners found that network executives were mostly positive about deploying or planning some type of multiplatform distribution infrastructure “soon or in the near future” to get their content out to more people. However, when asked more specifically what the challenges were to deployment, most (74 percent) cited staffing as the main cost hurdle, followed by file transcoding (42 percent) and storage (40 percent). More than 10,000 broadcast professionals in 100 countries participated in the comprehensive research report.

Ad Revenue on Twitter Increased Dramatically in 2013

A new eMarketer report shows that Twitter's ad business has grown significantly over the past year, thanks to a number of factors. Writes eMarketer, "Advertisers cite three reasons why they’re increasing spending on Twitter: The social network’s tie-ins with TV, its real-time nature and its willingness to partner closely on creative executions. Other developments that will drive growth this year include improved analytics, more ad offerings for international markets and additional ad products in the direct-response and ecommerce areas, according to a new eMarketer report, 'Advertising on Twitter: Unique Opportunities Outweigh Slowing User Growth.'" Second Screen Numbers for 2014 World Cup Expected To Be Huge

A new infographic from YuMe highlights survey results that anticipate some huge second screen numbers for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. 63% of those surveyed said they plan to watch match highlights on their computer, while 25% intend to do so on a tablet and 23% on a smartphone. 33% of those surveyed say that they plan to live-stream matches on laptops, and 22% on tablets. New Competition Show 'Rising Star' Uses Instagram for Auditions

ABC's new summer competition reality show Rising Star has officially opened up its audition window. Hopefuls can send their 15-second Instagram videos via Instagram direct to @RisingStarABC. To enter, users who are over 16 simply need to follow the Rising Star account on Instagram, direct message their video, and include their email address in the caption. The show's format is innately interactive. Contestants will be able to see their votes in real-time as they perform. (via Brief)

Dutch TV Provides Exemplary Second Screen Experiences

At the 2014 PromaxBDA Europe Conference, Jeroen Doucet, managing director of ComingNext TV, showed three examples of how Dutch television shows are successfully and creatively leveraging second screen to attract both viewers and advertisers. He said of the importance of providing engaging second screen content to TV viewers, "If they’re playing Flappy Bird, if they’re answering their Gmail, if they’re on Tinder, then their attention to TV is diluted." Unified Video Technologies Takes NAB Visitors to the Fights (On the Show Floor)

At the upcoming NAB Show in Las Vegas, a company called Unified Video Technologies (UNIV), based in Miami, Florida, will live-stream boxing matches via iVE, UNIV's 360-degree interactive video solution, from the 2014 NAB Show floor. The matches will be held throughout the show at a specially constructed, scaled-down ring located at the UNIV booth (N8023). Visitors to the booth will be able to compare the experience of watching the match in person with experiencing it through the iVE second screen app on Android and iOS mobile devices.
