Sundance and IFP Launch Web Series Categories

Web series are garnering attention from two of the biggest names in the independent film world. Sundance has launched an Episodic Story Lab and IFP has now included Web Series into the Emerging Visions portion of Independent FIlm Week.

Writes NoFilmSchool's Oakley Anderson-Moore, "What prompted organizations like Sundance and IFP taking notice of web series? Perhaps it’s to do with established filmmakers using the medium or the newness of the creativity the platform offers. Either way, for filmmakers who want to get into web series or those who have waited for the form to grow in credibility, this could be big."

MSNBC Launches NowThis News 15-Second News Series

MSNBC and NowThis News have partnered up to launch 15 Seconds to Truth, a daily 15-second video which will dig into a current headline. The series launched on MSNBC, Facebook and Twitter and will also air on MSNBC as transitional pieces between commercial breaks and their regular programming.

Says Phil Griffin, president of MSNBC, "MSNBC viewers want honest and informed perspectives that explore the often overlooked angles of important stories. With this new series we aim to continue delivering that unique vantage point in a visually gripping way, on-air and on mobile and social platforms.”

Starz's 'The Chair' to Use Multiplatform Voting

Starz's upcoming new reality show The Chair will highlight the process of two up-and-coming directors as they attempt to make a feature-length film off of the same script, budget, and locations. Through multiplatform voting, the audience will determine the winner of the show, who will receive $250,000.

The Chair is created by Project Greenlight's Chris Moore, and will feature mentors Zachary Quinto, Corey Moosa, Neal Dodson, Sean Akers and Josh Schader. Read more here on TV App Market.

YouTube Planning Traditional Advertising for its Stars

YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki talks to Advertising Age about her big plan for the site: advertising its stars and web series like a television show would.

She says, "Think of the last TV show you watched -- it was probably marketed to you in some way. If you look at our top creators, they have a lot of subscribers; it's all categories like entertainment, health and beauty, food, cooking, and yet I think a lot of times advertisers and users don't know about these channels...When you compare our stars to someone who is a star on TV, their awareness was built through broad [advertising] campaigns on television and billboards. So they built their audience through superfans as well as through casual fans."

Twitter's Chief Scientist: 'Twitter Makes Television Better'

In a keynote at the MIPTV television industry conference, Twitter's chief media scientist Deb Roy emphasized his company's impactful relationship with television.

“The biggest, most pervasive medium ever invented – television – is being intertwined with a global social medium, Twitter,” Roy said.“Twitter makes television better: it is in fact a force multiplier that can enhance the impact and possibilities of television.”

CNN Targets Mobile and Social Generation

CNN's aggressive launch of CNN Digital Studios, which comes with several new shows designed for social media shareability, is part of its plan to reach a younger, more mobile audience.

Says Chris Berend, CNN's VP for Video Content Development, "We are targeting the mobile and social generation. The shows we are doing, you’ll see the CNN DNA, but they’ll be geared towards new generation of CNN users.”
