Why TV Everywhere Seems to Be on a Slow Track

Alan Breznick of Light Reading explains why three-quarters of cable customers remain unaware that their cable providers offer TV Everywhere services.

He writes, "Speaking on a Cable Show panel this week, Brett Sappington, director of research for Parks Associates, blamed the low consumer awareness rate largely on the cautious, even lackluster marketing strategies of service providers. He said many providers 'really didn't want to go to market until they knew that it was running. It was kind of a slow start for many.'

The Next Wave of Second Screen: Interaction and Monetization

Joshua R. Weaver of AdMonsters writes about the new age of second screen: which includes interaction, gameification and monetization.

He writes, " With all the other distractions that cloud household primetime viewing, how do you make companion apps that one indispensable diversion? Aggregating the social dialogue and creating a base of loyalty among a TV show’s fans and superfans are key to having a tuned-in app user base. When it comes to building loyalty, everyone loves a reward; and, a good ol’ Price-Is-Right approach never hurt anyone. That’s exactly companion app Viggle’s philosophy."

MTV Adds On-Demand Video to Second Screen Apps

Viacom has added on-demand videos to the second screen apps that it currently has for MTV and MTV2, with plans to also roll out video for CMT, VH1 and LOGO's apps.

Explains Joan E. Solsman of CNET, "The app is meant to take what MTV's WatchWith and VH1's CoStar apps already do -- access video extras, browse photos, answer trivia, and loop in social commentary -- with on-demand streaming of shows on the devices. In other words, it keeps the "second screen" entertainment it offered with past apps but now turns an iPad or iPhone into a "first screen" too."

A Social TV Report Card for 'Falling Skies'

Chad Elkins of The 2nd Screen reviews TNT's Falling Skies second screen app and social TV strategies.

He writes of the app, "In general, the Falling Skies sync app does an excellent job at providing fans with an experience to bring them closer to the show with entertaining and informative content. From a marketer perspective, seeing the app opened to sponsoring brands to create their own elements to allow users to interact with would be of interest. Keep in mind, by interacting with users I mean brands taking an effort to add to the experience beyond a simple banner ad. Where the app falls short is in the sharing features."
